Disneyland Park Disneyland Park

Disneyland is a theme park at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, United States. It was the first theme park opened by the Walt Disney Company and the only one designed and constructed under the direct supervision of Walt Disney, opening on July 17, 1955. Disney initially envisioned building a tourist attraction adjacent to his studios in Burbank to entertain fans who wished to visit; however, he soon realized that the proposed site was too small for the ideas that he had. After hiring the Stanford Research Institute to perform a feasibility study determining an appropriate site for his project, Disney bought a 160-acre (65 ha) site near Anaheim in 1953. The park was designed by a creative team hand-picked by Walt from internal and outside talent. They founded WED Enterprises, the precursor to today’s Walt Disney Imagineering. Construction began in 1954 and the park was unveiled during a special televised press event on the ABC Television Network on July 17, 1955. Since its opening, Disneyland has undergone many expansions and major renovations, including the addition of New Orleans Square in 1966, Bear Country in 1972 (known today as Bayou Country), Mickey’s Toontown in 1993, and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in 2019. Additionally, the theme park Disney California Adventure opened in 2001 on the site of Disneyland’s original parking lot.

Irvine Regional Park Irvine Regional Park

Irvine Park is a 495-acre (200 ha) park in Orange, California. It became California’s first regional park in 1897. When first opened, it was called Orange County Park, and was originally 160 acres which were gifted by James Irvine, the park’s namesake. The land that is now Irvine Regional Park was originally part of Jose Antonio Yorba’s 47,227 acre Mexican land grant, Rancho Lomas de Santiago. In 1860, the land was sold for $7,000 to a trader named William Wolfskill, and changed hands for the same price again in 1860, this time to sheepmen from Monterey County. At the time, demand for wool was high, and flocks of sheep populated the park and its plateaus. As nearby communities grew, the area became a well-known gathering place for valley dwellers, and became known locally as the Picnic Grounds, with organized festivities taking place on the Fourth of July and May Day.

Orange County Zoo Orange County Zoo

The Orange County Zoo is a small 8-acre (3.2 ha) zoo located within the 477-acre (193 ha) Irvine Regional Park in the city of Orange, California, United States. The zoo is mainly home to animals and plants that are native to the Southwestern United States. The current zoo is owned, staffed and operated by the County of Orange, and officially opened as the Irvine Park Zoo in 1985. However, there have been animals in captivity on the site since 1905, when red foxes were introduced and bred by J.A. Turner. In 1920, a small collection of animals featuring a pair of mule deer was started by Tustin rancher Sam Nau. Eventually Nau built a pen for the deer. The main attraction was an alligator exhibit until a bird exhibit including cockatoos, quail, doves, and parakeets was added in 1935.
